Wayne W. Parrish was born in Decatur, Illinois on May 2, 1907. He studied journalism at the University of Illinois for two years, while serving as a special correspondent for the Chicago Herald and Examiner. In 1927 he moved to New York City, and put himself through school by working full time as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune and as a special correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor.
